Cold insulation is a specialised thermal system applied to equipment and piping operating below ambient temperature — including chilled water systems, refrigeration lines, HVAC ductwork, LNG storage tanks, and cryogenic pipelines — to prevent condensation, control heat ingress, and avoid energy loss. In the UAE's high-humidity environment, vapour barriers are always applied alongside the insulation to prevent moisture ingress, which is the primary cause of cold insulation system failure.

The most common cold insulation materials in UAE industrial projects are: closed-cell polyurethane foam (PUF) for LNG and cryogenic applications, polyisocyanurate (PIR) board for flat surfaces and vessels, elastomeric foam (e.g. Armaflex) for HVAC, chilled water pipes and refrigeration lines, foamglas (cellular glass) for below-grade and moisture-critical applications, and fiberglass for general cold service pipelines. All systems include a vapour barrier and aluminium or stainless steel cladding.

In the UAE's hot and humid climate — where relative humidity regularly exceeds 80% — moisture vapour migrates from the warm exterior toward the cold surface of insulated pipes and equipment. Without a correctly applied vapour barrier, this moisture condenses inside the insulation, causing it to become waterlogged, lose thermal effectiveness, and promote corrosion under insulation (CUI). A continuous, defect-free vapour barrier is therefore mandatory on all cold service insulation systems in the UAE.

Cold insulation covers a wide temperature range depending on the material. Elastomeric foam (Armaflex) is rated for −50°C to +105°C, suitable for HVAC and chilled water systems operating at 6°C to 18°C. PIR insulation handles −180°C to +120°C for LNG applications. Foamglas handles −268°C to +480°C for demanding cryogenic applications. Polyurethane foam (PUF) covers −200°C to +110°C for cryogenic tanks and pipelines.
